Cincinnati King
A juke box documentary musical.
Based on extensive interviews, the story traces the groundbreaking rise of music pioneer Syd Nathan, the artists he produced, the music he created and the enemies he made along the way. The show chronicles the behind-the-scenes drama of many King Records hits including “The Twist,” “Blues Stay Away From Me,” “Fever” and “Need Your Love So Bad.” Cincinnati King shines the spotlight on this revolutionary music label and its Queen City roots.

Walden (remix)
Written for young adults, based on interviews with young adults, Walden (remix) is modern riff of Henry David Thoreau’s Walden and Civil Disobedience. This Walden is about the first person to live (alone) on the moon, who is an 18-year-old woman named H. H gets video visits from her teenage pals back home, but her ties to earth and humanity are fading more and more as she spends time alone. Well, actually, she is not alone. She's kept company by an artificial intelligence system that she names Larry Bird, who is quickly evolving. Commissioned by The Alliance in Atlanta, this play examines social justice, climate change and what it means to be a young adult today. The world premiere was produced at St. Edward’s University, Austin Texas and an upcoming production will be at the University of Oklahoma.
The Making of a Saint
KJ is searching for something to believe in. Her brother is very spiritual. In fact, he is the official Petitioner of the Cause for the canonization of a Catholic saint— Sister Blandina Segale, who lived in the time we call the “Wild West.” Searching for a model for how to live a good life, KJ sets out to understand Sister Blandina’s extraordinary story. In this solo investigative performance based on interviews and research, KJ invites the audience into her search, exploring what it means to help others, and to bridge the distance between faith and doubt.
World Premiere at Dallas Theatre Center (2027)
Sister Blandina Segale, SOG

What an Impossible Idea is a poetic exploration the ways we love. It is up to the director and cast to determine whether the lines are delivered to other cast member(s), the audience, the sky, or are the internal thoughts of the characters voiced aloud. The possible relationships expressed among the four players may be romantic, intimate, familial, friendly, collegial, or of new territory yet unlabeled.

Desplazada
Co-Created by Katie Bender and KJ Sanchez, written by Katie Bender, Desplazada is a live performance built from transcripts and the experiences of displaced people building new lives in new locations, and the communities that serve them.

Katie Bender (she/her/hers) is a playwright, performer and theater maker. Her plays include Instructions for a Séance, Judith and Howling, Texas. Filled with games, physical exertion and a poetic delight in the mundane, her plays often examine the surprising ways humans transform within impossible systems.
